Summer is full of fun adventures but you’d be surprised how many people don’t know that everyday summer activities can seriously damage their engagement ring and worse, lead to lose it! We are about to interview some of you to see if you know about Summer dangers for your wedding rings.
Hiking and rock climbing
This one is kind of obvious and easy... Don't do it! Rings scrape against rocks and rough surfaces constantly, prongs catch and bend, and stones chip or loosen with repeated impact.
Just “hiking”? Sweat and SPF lotions can make your ring slide.
Hot day at the beach or by the pool
If you have opted for an alternative gemstones (not a diamond), prolonged sun exposure can bleach certain gemstones causing permanent color change.
The beach is a double threat to your engagement ring. First sand is abrasive and gets into every crevice. Then, your ring might slip off in the water as the cooler temperature will shrink your fingers.
No sand by the pool, but chlorine is corrosive. It damages and discolors metals and slowly erodes the finish and polish of gemstones. Hot tubs are especially harsh because of higher chemical concentrations.
Sunscreen and bug spray
Lotion and spray can work their way into the crevices of prong settings, building up over time and dulling your rings’ shine. They also leave a film on diamonds that makes diamond look hazy.
Put your sunscreen on first, let it absorb, then put your rings and jewelry on.
Travel luggages
Travel luggages are hard on jewelry. Lifting bags and hauling luggage put your rings at risk. Dropping a suitcase on your finger or catching a ring on luggage hardware can cause damage to both your jewelry and your hand. Ouch!
Sleeping beauty mode
You’re just planning a lot of rest off grid? Who would have guessed this could be a dangerous activity for your ring?
Prongs catch on sheets and pillowcases with every toss and turn, slowly bending and loosening with each night. Overtime, this leads to stones that wobble and eventually fall out.
Summer engagement ring care
How to keep your wedding rings and jewelry looking its best during the Summer
To be on the safe side, always have a container handy in your Summer bag tote your jewelry off on the go when needed. Keep pieces in a fabric-lined jewelry case or a box with compartments so they’re not scratching against each other.
Clean your jewelry and rings daily in soapy water with a soft toothbrush, or with the Lavish Jewelry Cleaner.

Check your stones regularly. Give your rings a gentle shake and listen for rattling that’s a sign a stone may be loose. This is especially important after any physical activity. Before Summer starts, take a trip to your jeweler to have them check your ring setting professionally.
Consider specific jewelry insurance. Even with perfect care, accidents happen, especially in summer. Insuring your most meaningful pieces gives you real peace of mind for all of life’s adventures. Check out the cost of ensuring your engagement ring at Jewelers Mutual.
