Who Wears the Pants in Your Relationship? (Spoiler: It's Complicated)

Who wears the pants in your relationship?

Okay first of all, can we talk about how outdated this phrase is? "Wearing the pants" implies someone's in charge and someone's being managed, which is honestly not the dynamic any of us are aspiring to. But the real question underneath it, about power dynamics, decision-making, and balance, is actually really worth exploring. Here is our is our humble relationship advice for couples about to commit to each other soon!

In 2026, the healthiest relationships are the ones where both people hold power in different areas. Maybe one person takes the lead on finances and the other drives the social calendar. Maybe big decisions get made together and neither person has unilateral final say. That shared approach is genuinely the goal.

But if you're asking this question because something feels off, like one of you is always giving in, always following the other's lead, always making themselves smaller, that's worth paying real attention to.

Relationships where one person consistently holds all the decision-making power can slowly become exhausting, and sometimes they cross into controlling territory without either person realizing it.

Check in with yourself honestly: do you feel heard in this relationship? Not just listened to in the moment, but actually heard, like your opinion genuinely shapes what happens? If the answer is yes, great. If the answer is not really, that's an important conversation to have sooner rather than later.

Also worth looking at: are you both putting in roughly equal emotional labor? This is a big one that doesn't get talked about enough. Emotional labor is the mental load of remembering things, managing feelings, keeping the relationship running smoothly, planning ahead. It often falls unevenly, and over time that imbalance creates real resentment.
